How do I work out a bookmaker's margin?

Convert each price to an implied probability by dividing 1 by the decimal odds, then add them up. A fair book totals 1.00. Anything above that is the margin: a total of 1.06 means roughly a 6% margin across that market.

Is a licensed site automatically safe?

A licence means an operator is accountable to a provincial board and subject to its conditions, which matters a great deal. It is not a statement that a product is well designed, that its odds are good value, or that its player-protection tools work well.

Where do I check a South African licence?

Start with the National Gambling Board's Verified Operators portal and the public register of the provincial authority named by the operator. The operator's own footer is a claim; the regulator's record is the evidence.

Understand the product

Every betting product is priced to return less than it takes in over time. That is the business model, and it is usually published. Before betting on something new, find out the rules, the margin and the most a single bet can cost you.

Understand the odds

Odds express a probability and a price at the same time. The gap between the two is the margin. In fixed-odds betting you can calculate it: add the implied probabilities of every outcome, and anything above 100% is the book's margin. In virtuals and other generated products the same margin is built into the odds.

Work out what a market is saying before deciding whether you agree with it. If you cannot say why the price is wrong, the bet is entertainment rather than judgement, which is fine as long as you know which one you are doing.

Check the operator

Scroll to the footer. A licensed South African operator normally names its licensing province, its board and often a licence number. Check that against the NGB Verified Operators portal and the relevant provincial board's public register. The register is authoritative; a footer is only a claim.

If no board is named anywhere on the site, treat that as a reason for caution, particularly before depositing.

Check the software

Who built the platform matters as much as who is selling the bet. Look for the supplier name, whether the rules and margin are published, and whether independent testing is claimed and by whom. Where a product claims to be provably fair, look for a mechanism you can actually run.

Understand your own behaviour

The most reliable warning signs are behavioural rather than financial: chasing losses, gambling to change your mood rather than for entertainment, hiding it from people close to you, and finding that limits you set for yourself do not hold.

Most licensed platforms provide deposit limits, loss limits, session reminders, cooling-off periods and self-exclusion. These work best set in advance, when you are not in the middle of a session.
